LIFE IN THE FUTURE
READING
❖ Before You Read
Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions. (Làm việc từng
đôi. Thảo luận những câu hỏi sau.)
1. Do you think life will be better in the future ? Why/ Why
not?
2. List three things that might happen in the future
Answer:
1. Yes, because of many new advancemernts in science and
technology, especially in medicine, man’s life will be better. Man no longer
fear or fear anxious about incurable diseases, which were considered fatal
ones, such as cancer, diabets, smallpox...
2. In the future, three things might happen, I think.
First, man can travel into outerspace : to the moon, and other
planets in the universe. Next, all dometic chores are done by machine or by
robots, and finally, offices will go electronic and people can do most of things
with computers such as shopping, buying goods or tickets,...
❖ While You Read
Read the text and do the tasks that follow.

The major disadvantage is so many people will lose their jobs for much more
work will be done by machine or automatically.
C : Next, you may get lazy because of much free time.
A : In addition, the maintenance cost is high because of high

SPEAKING
Task 1: Look at the newspaper cuttings from the future, and say what will
have happened by the end of the 21th century.

By the end of the 21st century. there will bave been several cities on the moon with a population of over hundreds of thousands.
2. By the end of the 21st century, the common cold will have ended because
scientists have found a cure for it.
3. By the end of the 21st century, many peole will have lived up to the age of
more than one hundred, even to 150.
Task 2: Work in pairs. Which of these predictions are likely / unlikely to
happen? Give at least two reasons for each.

1. I think it's likely that people will be living longer
thanks to improved living standards and to the inventions of modern and
effective medicines and cures.
2. I think it's unlikely that by the end of the 21st century
people will be living to the age of 100 or more, even to 150, because there
will be more and more fatal and dangerous diseases and the living environment
will be more toxic and harmful for man. What’s more it is the threat of
terrorism.
3. In my opinion, it's unlikely man will travel to Mars or
Jupiter by the end of the 21st century, because at present man
cannot know for sure anything about these planets and they are very far from
our earth and loo costly as well.
Task 3: Work in groups. Make some more predictions about what life will be
like one hundred years from now.
A. I think it’s very likely that life will be easier and more
comfortable one hundred years from now thanks to the great developments in
Science and technology.
B. But the living environment will be much worse because of
the growing rate of pollution, unless there are no appropriate measures for it.
C. What’s more man's life is likely to set more unstable and
at risk of being removed due to the uncxpeclcd changes of the earth's climate.
And the global wanning has been becoming the most fatal threat 10 man with
deadly burnine-hot droughts and terrible floods in some parts in ihe world.
D. Simultaneously, some seriously deadly diseases have happened such
as AIDS, and menial diseases are threatening man’s life expectancy.
A. Personally, in spite of the present underlying dangers, we
are strongly confident that man's life in hundred years from now will probably
be much easier once the whole mankind is aware of the benefits of co-operating
for the common good.

have a long and healthy life?
B. Well, I think it's eating healthy foods and doing exercise.
A. But I’m told that “early to bed and early to rise make man
wise, ... and healthy.”
B. Besides we should have a moderate diet in eating and
drinking, for example not eating too much or drinking too much, specially hard
drinks.
In addition, in my opinion, we should have the moments of
relaxation in life and avoid being strapped in stressful situations.

❖ Tapescript
Dr. David, a Dutch biologist, is being interviewed about
people’s life expectancy in the future.
Interviewer : Many scientists predict that in the 21st century
people will be living into the incredible age of 130. What do you think about
it?
Dr. David: Well, I quite agree with them. They have reasons to
be confident about that
Interviewer: What are the reasons?
Dr. David: In fact their prediction is based on research and on the
fact that the centenarian population is mushrooming as our general health
improves.
Interviewer: Can you explain this further?
Dr. David : A century ago, average age expectancy in Europe
was 45. Today, providing we look after ourselves, eat more healthily, cut down
on things like bulter, alcohol and cigarettes, we can add nearly 35 years to
that figure.
Interviewer: So these are the factors that help people live
longer.
Dr. David :Yes. But the most important factor is the
development in medical
science.
Interviewer: Whai do you mean?
Dr. David: Nobody die from old age, but just from diseases
that affect people when they get older.
Interviewer: So scientists are trying to find cures for fatal
diseases like cancer and AIDS?
Dr. David: Right. Nowadays, about 50% of cancers are curable,
and I really believe that within 30 years this will increase to 80%. And in ten
years' time. AIDS will also be brought under control, too.
Interviewer : Thai sounds interesting. What about living
forever?
Dr. David: So far. Eternal life is just science fiction. But
with the advance of science, it's not impossible.
Task 2: Listen again and answer the questions about-the- interview.
1. What are the factors that help people have longer life expectancy
according to Dr. Davis?
2. Which factor is the most important one? Why?
3.What will we have been able to do about AIDS in ten years'
time?
Answer :
1. They are eating more healthily, cutting down on things like
butter, alcohol and cigarettes.
2. It's the development in medical science, because many new
medicines and new therapies on treatments as well as modern equipment will be
invented.
3. In ten years' time, AIDS will also be brought under control.
❖ After You Listen
Work ill pairs. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of
having a very long life.
A. What do you think about having a very long life? Whether doesn't
it bring about advantages or not?
B. Well, if you ask me, living a very long life is an
advantage.
A. Why?
B. First, people can do things they want to do. Secondly they
can enjoy life more.
A. I see. Old people can help their children or grandchildren
by giving them experience and good advice.
B. And “Old grandparents and parents is a wonderdful grace for
children” because they have a precious opportunity to show their filial duties.
A. But living a very long life does, actually, have some
disadvantages.
B. What makes you have that idea?
A. Very old people are usually too weak, so they hardly do
anything and they can get ill easily.
B. You mean they will become a burden for their children.
A. And for society, too. Additionally, very old people
themselves feel lonely because their children and grandchildren have grown up
and are busy with their daily work and own lives.
B. And their peers are dead.
A. So in a rather pessimist view, long life is not completely happy
but it gives a contribution to the world’s population growth. instead.
B. It’s impossible to reject that factor, of course.

IV. WRITING
In 150 words, write a passage about the changes in our lives
in the next 30 years. You should focus on the following areas.
·
People
·
Foods and water
·
Transportation
·
Communications
tin.
For an idea of what our lives will be in 30 years from now, just
look back 30 years from now for a clear view.
Nobody of us can definitely deny we are making a lot of
changes, great and wonderful changes in every area of life. Right? Just imagine
something about it.
About people's health, we can see there is a trend in weight
gain and obesity in various ages, from infancy to adult. Do you think it’s a
dangerous threat to death? Now we are often heard about diabetes, heart disease
and cancers in old age nearly everywhere. So can you say life in the future
will be much better than now it is?
Although technology gives us many things, reducing the amount
of physical effort, we have to work more and more for existence. That makes
more worse, it’s the booming growth in population. And now we are facing the
food crisis, and the underlying famine is threatening some poor countries.
Fresh water? It is the most important problem for the whole mankind. With all
the people living today, there is not enough fresh water to support life for
the source of water is partly or completely polluted from farming and industry
wastes.
For transportation, now traffic jams and accidents are the
problem for citydwellers in spite of fast and comfortable vehicles..
With negative effects of present advancements, no one can say
what our lives will look like!
